Last update: January 31, 1999
The
official state song is "Alabama".
There is no particular order to the songs listed below. I welcome any and all
suggestions and especially corrections, as well as additional information on any
song listed below.
Songs of love for Alabama
- "My Home's in Alabama", by Alabama
- "Alabama's the Place to Be" on School's Out by Little Jimmy Reed
- "Alabama Song" on Alabama Song by Allison Moorer
- "Stars Fell on Alabama" is more about falling in love than about Alabama, but it
is a nice song. Jimmy Buffet (from Mobile) had a jazzy version, and I still
have an affection for the version by Ricky Nelson in the 60s.
- "Alabama State Of Mind" on Moonlighter by Claire Lynch
- "Alabama Sky" on The Closer You Get and Country Side Of Life by
Alabama
- "Alabama Saturday Night" on Montana Slim: A Prairie Legend by Wilf Carter
- "Alabama Clay" (L. Cordle, R. Scaife) with versions on:
- A Change Of Scenery (Sugar Hill SH-CD 3763) by The Seldom Scene
- Garth Brooks by Garth Brooks
- "Alabama Jubilee" -- here are some of the versions:
- on Champagne Charlie by Leon Redbone
- on Country Guitar Thunder (1977-81) by Merle Travis and Joe Maphis
- on Texas Fiddle Collection by Johnny Gimble
- on Mandolin Magic by Evan Marshall
- on Livin' In The Past by Kentucky Colonels
- "Alabama Bound" -- here are some of the versions:
- on Midnight Special by Leadbelly
- on Ballads from Deep Gap by Doc & Merle Watson
- on The Vanguard Years by Doc Watson
- on Blues, Songs And Ballads by Tom Rush
Uncertain terrain
Sorry, I just don't know if these are appropriate. Suggestions are welcome.
- "Alabama" on Tragic Songs of Life by the Louvin Brothers
- "Alabama Rain" by Jim Croce on I Got A Name, Time In A Bottle and
Down The Highway
- "Alabama Song" on The Doors
by the Doors (see sound sample in
real audio)
- "Alabama 'Shine" on The Woodys by the Woodys -- is this moonshine or praise
for home?
- "Alabama Getaway" Go To Heaven by Grateful Dead
The dark side
- "Sweet Home Alabama", whether the original by Lynyrd Skynyrd (on NFC or
that by the
Leningrad Cowboys, cannot be presented without presenting the other side:
- "Alabama" by Neil Young on Harvest
Thus for the purposes of this site I prefer to omit both.
