Songs of South Carolina

Last update: January 18, 1999

The official state song, "Stand Tall", is included along with songs for all the other states on Coolidge 50.

I welcome any and all suggestions and especially corrections, as well as additional information on any song listed below.

Songs of love for South Carolina

  • "Hickory Wind" (G. Parsons, G. Buchanan)
This beautiful song is unambiguously about South Carolina. I could not believe it was written by Gram Parsons; I thought it had always been there, like God created it the day he created South Carolina.
The song has been recorded by many, including the following:

    Carolina / the Carolinas

"Carolina" is sung in many a song, but is it North or South? Bob Marshall writes, "Although I always picture South Carolina myself". But for me, being from Virginia, crossing the Carolina border put you in North Carolina. Since we cannot agree, I will reduntantly list Carolina entries under both states. Even the official state song of South Carolina is simply "Carolina".

  • "Carolina", Charlie Daniels, on High Lonesome

  • "In My Mind I'm Going to Carolina", James Taylor on Greatest Hits, original album title unknown, written by James Taylor; contributed by Bob Marshall

  • "Carolina in the Pines", Michael Martin Murphey from the album Blue Sky, Night Thunder (Epic EK 33290); contributed by Bob Marshall

  • "Goodbye to Carolina", Lyle Lovett.

    Honorable mention

  • "Carolina Star", written/sung by Hugh Moffatt This beautiful, heart-rendering song is about a person, not a state. There is also an Australian "Caledonia Star" version that reflects the roots-orientation of the song.

  • "Carolina Pines" by Kate Wolf on Poet's Heart (Kaleidoscope K-24) is beautiful, but rather about a dissolved relationship.

  • "Heads Carolina, Tails California" by Jo Dee Messina on Jo Dee Messina (WEA/Atlantic Curb, release date: 04/09/96)
